Routinely changing your HVAC unit’s air filters will not only help maintain the air quality inside your house, but will also reduce the strain on your cooling system. Remember: since clogged filters hamper airflow, they force your HVAC system’s blower fans to work harder to circulate air, which hastens wear and tear.
How often should you replace your HVAC system’s air filters? As a general rule, you should replace them every 90 days (or every 60 days if you have a pet). Keep in mind that improper AC maintenance is just as bad as the outright neglect of it. That’s why it’s important to avoid common—but costly—filter mistakes that can damage your HVAC unit.
Bill Reynolds Heating & Air Conditioning, your trusted cooling and heating service contractor, lists the mistakes you should avoid below:

Using the wrong size of filter. The filter needs to be the correct size. Otherwise, airborne particles could slip past it through gaps between it and the air vents.
Installing the wrong kind of air filter. Before buying a new air filter, always check which types of filters your HVAC system supports. In particular, you should check the filter’s minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating. This rating will give you an idea of how efficient the air filter is at removing particles from the indoor air. In general, the higher a filter’s MERV rating, the more effective it is at maintaining good indoor air quality.
Important note: keep in mind that a higher MERV rating isn’t necessarily better. This is because air filters with membranes that are too dense may impede airflow. If you’re having trouble choosing a new air filter for your HVAC system, don’t hesitate to consult an experienced HVAC and furnace installation contractor.
Neglecting routine HVAC inspections. In addition to replacing your HVAC system’s air filters every three months, it’s important to have your system routinely inspected. Most contractors would recommend scheduling inspections at least once every year. Through routine inspections, technicians can detect and fix potential issues before they can affect your air conditioner’s performance.
